Q. What does the third petition mean?
A. “Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” means: Help us and all people to reject our own wills and to obey your will without any back talk. Your will alone is good (1). Help us one and all to carry out the work we are called to (2), as willingly and faithfully as the angels in heaven (3).
Read: (1) Matt. 7:21; 16:24-26; Luke 22:42; Rom. 12:1-2; Tit. 2:11-12; (2) 1 Cor. 7:17-24; Eph. 6:5-9; (3) Ps. 103:20-21.
Imagine living in a world where God’s good purposes and His good will was done on earth every single day. Imagine what it would be like to live in a world where God’s infinite wisdom and mercy abounded and overflowed. Imagine being called to be part of bringing God’s will into earth. Sister, this is what God is calling us to. This is the adventure that God invites us in today. But how do we subscribe? Let’s study question 123 of The Heidelberg Catechism and find out.
“Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done” (Luke 22:42). Unspoken sacrifice. Ghastly agony. Extreme intensity. The carrying of God’s wrath to save sinners. Jesus understood what was about to happen. Jesus understood what He was about to experience. And even though He prayed for God’s will to remove this cup from Him, immediately after, God answered the prayer by strengthening Him so that the Father’s will, the saving of His children, would be achieved; regardless of the pain; regardless of the cost.
Praying “Thy will be done” is not for the double minded. God’s will is to accomplish His saving purposes in our lives and in the lives of others. And Jesus, who knew God’s will, warned us over and over again about the cost that it would require for us to follow God and follow His will in our lives.
See sister, following God requires blind trust. A trust that allows us to become living sacrifices (Romans 12:1-2). A trust that regardless of what we may loose or what it may cost, allows us to willingly obey. It is a trust that submits and seeks to accomplish His love mission through our lives so that His glorious will may be done on earth as it is in heaven.
The crazy thing is that God, who is sovereign and could easily impose His will invites us to be part of this magnificent adventure. We ask for what God wills and we focus on the small picture of the details of our lives where everything is but a tool that God has kindly gifted us so that His will in our lives and in the lives of others may be done. What an adventure! What an invitation! It is so worth it regardless of the cost because we know that God’s will is so so good! So sister, let’s forsake our small minded plans and give them to God’s will, that the world that we yearn to see will come as we wait for the fulfillment of His glorious Kingdom.
So sister, today I want to ask you: what are you waiting for? Will you use every good gift that God has given you, namely, your health and your wealth and your time so that as He reveals His will in your life you humbly obey? May it be so, for then you will find the abundant life you want.
